Body recovery - Roxana, Station 90
Monday, September 29, 2003

On September 29th, 2003 the Millville Dive Team was requested to assist the Roxana Vol. Fire Co., with a confirmed drowning at the Assawoman Wildlife Refuge in Bayard. (84-18) 3rd Asst. Chief Evans responded to the scene and consulted with Roxana Chief (90-15) Lynch. The victim's information was collected and relayed to the team upon their arrival. Dive Captain Dill arrived next and started to outline the teams dive profile and search patterns. Several divers were transported to the area where the victim was last seen and almost immediately a recovery was made. The victim was an employee of the Wildlife reserve and had been working with another employee on a marshy area when he noticed that their boat had drifted away. He entered the water and started to swim after the boat and at some point began to have problems and submerged in the murky water. Initial speculation centered around the victim having an unknown medical problem that precipitated the drowning. The body was turned over to the State Medical Examiners Office and the scene was turned over to the Delaware State Police and Department of Natural Resources Police.
